Candid: This may seem like a reportage/photojournalist style, but actually may have been set up, albeit casually. The effect looks natural, but the people being photographed are aware of it and may have been given some direction.

Avant Garde: A very creative shot, this is used sparingly but often to very dramatic effect. Photographers will use lines and symmetry, playing with perspective and space to portray the bride, groom or event in an unusual and arresting way.

Romantic: The classic shot of the bride and groom lends an emotional power to any wedding album. Don't be afraid of it - any good photographer will be able to relax you and make it feel fun and natural. It's capturing an intimate moment where the couple are either alone, or in the fray with only eyes for each other. It's the shot that every relative and friend will go all soppy over!

When a professional photographer has taken your wedding pictures on their extremely expensive equipment, they will then scurry back to their studio. There, they have an editing suite which isn't the sort you'd buy for £39.99 at PC World -think more James Bond villain hi-tech. There, they will continue the process of taking the photograph. That might sound weird, but it's true - previously, the film in the camera partly dictated how the photograph would look. Now, the world is their darkroom! Professional photographers will spend a set amount of time on the main photographs they've chosen -as they can take up to 500 on the day, they will be selective. Editing and manipulation is not a substitute for great photography; they use effects to enhance and help create moods, not to change the image completely.

Black and white
In the old days, artistic and moody pictures were given that Hollywood glamour treatment by using black and white film. While digital may have changed the method, the creative impulse is the same. Black and white may now be processed by computer, but it still adds drama and offers some beautiful tonal ranges the eye won't pick up in colour images.

Tints
Blue and sepia are the most regular tints in a wedding album and tend to be used sparingly. At the fingertips of an expert, the effect can be truly award-winning! Tints don't have to completely wash over the image, it can be a very subtle effect that can make the image look like a movie-still.
